Dentinoenamel Junction as a Model for Dentin Bonding Optimization
نویسنده
چکیده
The purpose of this article is to review evidence-based principles that could help optimize dentin bonding for indirect composite and porcelain restorations. More than 30 articles were reviewed, most of them addressing the specific situation of dentin bonding for indirect restorations. It appears that the combined results of this data plus clinical experience suggest the need for a revision in the dentin bonding procedure. Immediate application and polymerization of the dentin bonding agent to the freshly cut dentin, prior to impression taking, is recommended. This new application procedure, the so-called immediate dentin sealing (IDS), appears to achieve improved bond strength, fewer gap formations, decreased bacterial leakage, and reduced dentin sensitivity. The use of filled adhesive resins (low elastic modulus liner) facilitates the clinical and technical aspects of IDS. This rational approach to adhesion also has a positive influence on tooth structure preservation, patient comfort, and long-term survival of indirect bonded restorations. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Tooth preparation for indirect bonded restorations (eg, composite/ceramic inlays, onlays, and veneers) can generate significant dentin exposures. It is recommended to seal these freshly cut dentin surfaces with a dentin bonding agent (DBA) immediately following tooth preparation, before taking impression. A three-step total-etch DBA with a filled adhesive resin is recommended for this specific purpose. The major advantages, as well as the technical challenges of this procedure, are presented in detail. (J Esthet Restor Dent 17:144–155, 2005)

Evaluation of Shear Bond Strength of Newer Bonding Systems on Superficial and Deep Dentin
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to compare the shear bond strength of nanocomposite resin to superficial dentin and deep dentin using two different dentin bonding systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS All teeth were sectioned at various levels (superficial dentin: Dentin within 0.5-1 mm of dentinoenamel junction; deep dentin: Dentin within 0.5 mm of the highest pulp horn) using a Carborundu...

AIM Dental tissues such as enamel, dentinoenamel junction (DEJ), dentin, and root dentin can react differently to demineralization and remineralization. The aim of this study was to evaluate the remineralization ability of sodium fluoride on the microhardness of enamel, dentin, and dentinoenamel junction. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ten extracted third molar teeth were sectioned mesiodistally to fo...
متن کاملEffect of Dimethyl Sulfoxide on Bond Strength of a Self-Etch Primer and an Etch and Rinse Adhesive to Surface and Deep Dentin
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Composite bond to dentin is crucial in many clinical conditions particularly in deep cavities without enamel margins due to insufficient penetration of adhesive into demineralized dentin. PURPOSE The aim of this study was to assess the shear bond strength (SBS) of a methacrylate-based and a silorane-based composite resin to surface and deep dentin after pretreatment w...
متن کاملCrack arrest within teeth at the dentinoenamel junction caused by elastic modulus mismatch.
Enamel and dentin compose the crowns of human teeth. They are joined at the dentinoenamel junction (DEJ) which is a very strong and well-bonded interface unlikely to fail within healthy teeth despite the formation of multiple cracks within enamel during a lifetime of exposure to masticatory forces. These cracks commonly are arrested when reaching the DEJ. The phenomenon of crack arrest at the D...
متن کاملDistribution and organization of odontoblast processes in human dentin.
The distribution and organization of odontoblast processes in young human dentin was examined with a scanning electron microscope. By applying the HCl-collagenase method, the extracellular matrix of dentin was almost completely removed, thereby exposing the odontoblast processes and their branches to direct observation. The odontoblast processes are located close to the dentinoenamel junction. ...
